Tan N. Dao, Director, Mathnasium Master Certified

Tan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He has worked more than 22 years in the semiconductor industry. He received awards for outstanding customer service, leadership in manufacturing yield enhancement, and power consumption reduction. He holds 5 U.S. patents.

Tan’s original goal, upon leaving the corporate world, was to become a full time math teacher. While substitute teaching, he realized that the classroom setting does not provide him with the opportunity to help all those who needed it, in the way that he wants to help them, and he began to search for other ways to accomplish his goals.

In Mathnasium, he found the perfect vehicle to fulfill his goals of teaching math to children in his community and to provide excellent service to the students of Austin and the surrounding areas.

Tan was born and raised in Viet Nam. He moved to the United States as a teenager, where he was warmly welcomed by his new neighbors in the Texas communities. He has lived and worked in Israel, and worked on joint projects with engineering teams around the world. Austin is Tan’s hometown since 1976, where he resides with his wife and son.

Alex Munoz, Center Supervisor

I was raised in the Rio Grande Valley (deep south Texas).  Since childhood I enjoyed mathematics, both mental and written.  I became extremely competitive in UIL Academic events.  I love and miss being part of a music ensemble.  I graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology in 2011, and am working on my second bachelor's in Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin.  Someday I hope to earn a PhD in Neuroscience. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, watching movies, playing video games, and playing the piano.

Michael Griffin, Instructor

I was born in Dallas, Texas and moved to Austin 2 years ago. I attend UT and am and Electrical and Computer Engineering Major. Math and science have always been my favorite subjects. In my free time, I perform in the UT Steel Band.

Wrenell Ilustre, Instructor

I was born and raised in Rowlett, Texas. In my junior year of high school, I moved to Beaumont, Texas when I was accepted to an early college program at Lamar University: The Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities. Later, in the Fall of 2016, I transferred to St. Edward's Univeristy here in Austin where I am studying for a BS in Biochemistry. I hope to one day graduate with a Doctor of Pharmacy so I can research and teach about a variety of medicine's effect on the body. I enjoy driving, road trips, and trying new things.

Cindy Zieschang, Instructor

As a Native Texan, I have lived in Austin since I got married. I have two grown children. My undergraduate degree is in Chemistry from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University). I have experience coaching PSIA number sense. I enjoy spending time with my family. In my free time, I enjoy hydro training (water aerobics), swimming, hiking, and cycling. I participate in triathlons.

Rick Haller, Instructor

I was born in Ann Arbor Michigan, and I received a BS with honor, in Mathematics, from Michigan State Univeristy. Since then, I have taught math in several institutions, and have explored quite a few other areas of life. I like Mathnasium because it gives me the opportunity to work, one on one with students, to help them fill in any gaps they may have in their understanding, and to move forward with their math, in a positive way. Some of my other interest include exercise, philosophy, writing, and meditation.

Romin Stuart-Rasi, Instructor

I was raised in Aurora, Colorado. I have always enjoyed mathematics, however, at age 16, Physics took most of my interest. I will be attending UT Austin's graduate Physics program in the Fall, in which I will be doing research in gravity (relativity). In my free time, I read research papers in my field, play video games, and weight lift. My end goal after my PhD is to have a tenured professor position, in which I can teach and research.

Katina Hoag, Instructor

I have two smart and beautiful children. I was a full-time Algebra 2 teacher for 4 yearsin and around Houston, TX. My fiance and our familty recently moved here to Austin, my original hometown, so I could begin a new career as a CPA and as a math instructor at Mathnasium. I am so happy to use my experiences and skills to fill in the gaps your students have in their math skills, which presented various issues in my previous student's math careers.
