Set Your Child's Math Future up for Success!

Jul 27, 2020 | South Tampa

This past spring led to a sudden and mass experiment in homeschooling. For many parents, it was an unwelcome reminder that much of their math once learned had long been forgotten. You might have found yourself reviewing countless videos on Khan Academy or YouTube to help your child with homework or prepare for an upcoming test. Some of you might have just given up, and that’s okay too. A top STEAM company recently surveyed parents on which subjects they felt the least prepared to help with, and math topped the list.

Math skills are required more now than ever, and this summer’s stats are not looking promising. According to the Northwest Evaluation Association, students could be losing 50 percent of math skills due to school closures; a typical summer is around 20 percent loss. We need to get students past the “I can’t” and get them to “I can.”

COVID-19 is not going anywhere soon, and the start of school is just around the corner. Whether your child’s day will be spent in a classroom or in front of a computer e-learning, it is our job as parents and educators to make sure these critical math skills are not lost in the disruption of our new way of learning.
