Personal or Group Instruction? What Does Mathnasium Use?
Jan 12, 2022
What's the difference between group tutoring and individual tutoring? What happens at Mathnasium? Excellent questions! We're glad you asked :)
Group tutoring sessions are basically small classes where several students work with the same instructor, at the same time, on the same type of math.
Individual tutoring is just that: one student with one instructor.
The downfall of group tutoring is that students don't all learn at the exact same pace, or begin at the same starting point. You can't teach five kids the same math at the same pace unless you want some students left behind and others bored and unchallenged.
Similarly, one-on-one tutoring has a downfall, too. We call it "tutor dependence" and it means a student has been spoonfed each step and each answer for so long that their ability to solve problems independently has diminished.
Mathnasium of South Tulsa strikes a great balance by utilizing Team Teaching, an approach that has multiple instructors helping multiple students. Each child receives one on one instruction, independent working time, and when there are questions, any of our Mathnasium instructors can jump in and help. Minimal waiting and individualized instruction! A perfect combination.
