Our Team

Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting; our unique approach enables us to explain concepts really well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn! Read below to learn more about our talented team:

 Larry Martinek, Chief Instructional Officer

Larry has spent his entire career finding a better way to teach math. From inner-city to public schools to acclaimed magnet schools to leading private and parochial schools, Larry has served as a classroom teacher and as an educational consultant. He has designed curriculum, teaching strategies, and teaching materials to help students and teachers learn math more effectively. He has trained teachers in the art and science of boosting students’ ability to “do” math, thereby increasing students’ math scores and feeling of self-worth. Larry is the developer of Mathnasium’s educational program, one of the most comprehensive and innovative curriculums ever produced for teaching math.

While Larry is not an instructor at our Center, he is a valuable asset we can call on to ask about specific students' scenarios for guidance and advice. This has helped to make visits more productive and enjoyable for many of our students.

Alan Saxena, Center Owner

Inspiring the next generation of minds is the most important undertaking of all.

Alan is the owner of Mathnasium of Avon, as well as another center in Trumbull CT and Manchester, New Hampshire. When Alan first heard of Mathnasium so long ago, he never could have dreamed of how many lives he would change for the better. Now, almost 5 years after deciding to start a center of his own, he wouldn't change a second of it! With all of the hustle and bustle of running 3 centers, Alan is generally a motion blur, always moving and never sitting still. He is always happy to make time for our parents, however, and loves to chat about how their students are doing wherever life takes them!

CenterDirectorAndrew Fisher, Regional Center Director

On a mission to take the 'fear' out of math

My job is to make sure every student loves their math experience here and develops solid Math confidence.
I have been a math enthusiast all my student years and have found the Mathnasium method to be the best method of teaching math. I was a calculus student in high school ( A grade) and a Math major in college and I believe every child has the potential to excel at math if they are taught the concepts in the right way. Their 'aha' moment when they finally get an elusive concept makes my day! I help children arrive at their own understanding of math concepts and learn how to solve for answers rather than memorize 'math facts'. That is the first building block for a lifetime of 'Math Confidence'.
An avid hiker, I have hiked many northeast US trails and have even tumbled down a mountain once . But I didn't give up -- I still hike every chance I get!

Chris Carbone, Lead Instructor

Chris graduated from Sacred Heart University with his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, and with his MAT and certification in 7-12 Secondary Mathematics and Educational Technology. He currently teaches at Waterbury Community College. He has worked with students as both a tutor and a teacher at schools in Stamford and Stratford. He believes every student has the capacity to learn at their own rate, and enjoys helping students learn new math concepts.

Lisa Testani, Instructor

Lisa is a CT-certified teacher for grades K-6.  Lisa has an M.S. in Education from the University of Bridgeport. She has taught at both private and public schools in CT. She has been a tutor with Achievement First as well as a camp counselor at the Westport/Weston YMCA. Lisa loves math and enjoys helping students succeed.
