Mathnasium's Fifth Annual TriMathlon - October 17, 2015
Oct 17, 2015
Thanks for joining us at the 5th Annual National TriMathlon!
Congratulations to all the local students who showed their strength in numbers at Mathnasium's Fifth Annual National TriMathlon, held Saturday, October 17th, 2015 at Mathnasium of Livingston, in addition to hundreds of other Mathnasium centers across the US and Canada.
As a triathlon tests an athlete's fitness and endurance through three rewarding physical challenges, the TriMathlon exercises each mathlete's mental acuity and stamina through three fun and engaging mathematical challenges: The Counting Game, Magic Squares, and a Mental Math Workout. This annual international competition enables elementary school kids to exert their mathematical prowess and number sense in a relaxed, festive environment.
After the students finished the TriMathalon, they were treated to a variety of mathematical magic tricks from one of the staff, and enjoyed other fun games and puzzles, including several mind-twisting Rubik's Cubes. Friendly competition ensued as some raced against the instructors to solve the Rubik's Cubes as fast as they could.
At the conclusion of the event, over $700 in prizes was awarded locally to the top 3 scorers in each grade level (shown in the table below). More prizes will be awarded to the national winners early in November once all nationwide results are tallied and any requisite tie-breaker tests are administered.

PRIZES: First Place: $100, Second Place: $50, Third Place: $25
"We had a record turnout and a lot of fun this year!" remarked Jodi Ralston, adding "The TriMathlon is intended to both promote and celebrate a culture that fluently speaks the universal language of math, a culture in which mathematics represents a rewarding challenge — not a tedious chore." Jodi co-owns and operates local Mathnasium centers with her husband, James. Their centers in Westfield, Summit, Chatham, and now in Livingston, provide one-on-one math instruction and tutoring — in either a group or private setting — for students in grades 2 through 12. Mathansium offers a variety of enrichment opportunities for those students wanting to explore mathematics and related fields more deeply. James added, "Through genuinely engaging and upbeat mathematics competitions like the Mathnasium TriMathlon, we are striving to make productive academic competition in childhood just as fun and rewarding as the plethora of athletic sports kids already enjoy. The rewards of strong number sense might not always be as immediate as our TriMathlon gifts and prizes, but the lifelong benefits from developing solid mathematical skills and understanding in childhood are immeasurably greater."
