Our Team

Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting; our unique approach enables us to explain concepts really well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn! Read below to learn more about our talented team:

Tammy Gray, Center Director

Tammy holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Virginia Commonwealth University and an Associate’s Degree in Human Services from Reynolds Community College. She comes to us with 16 years of experience working with children at the children’s clothing company CWDkids. Mathnasium’s dedication to making a difference in the lives of students and commitment to making a difference in our local communities attracted Tammy to Mathnasium, and we’re thrilled to have her on board! Outside of the center, Tammy is an avid bike rider and loves to ride the Cap trail with her husband!

Alex Dardick, Assistant Center Director

Alex graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Mathematics. He started as an instructor at Mathnasium in 2018 and worked in that role for 4 years before taking on the mantle of Assistant Center Director. He was drawn to Mathnasium because of his love for sharing math with those around him, and is thrilled to do so every day through his interactions with parents and students. One day, Alex hopes to become a school teacher, continuing his mission to change lives through math!

Eric Field, Education Coordinator

Eric started out at Mathnasium as an instructor. During this time he excelled at building rapport with students and providing phenomenal instruction, which led to him pursuing the role of Education Coordinator. Eric feels that sharing the understanding of math and seeing the growth in the students is fulfilling and empowering. He enjoys working with the students and the teams at the Mathnasiums of Chester and Woodlake to change lives through math. Fun Fact: Eric knows the first 50 digits of π by memory!

Jim Burns, District Manager

Jim grew up in Elmsford, New York and went to the University of Dayton where he studied Business and Marketing. We’re excited to take advantage of his experience coaching, mentoring, and developing front line leaders to enhance our own team! Jim was drawn to Mathnasium by our ability to enrich and positively impact kids. When not working, Jim enjoys cooking, reading, spending time with his family and following his life long favorite baseball team, the NY Yankees.

Nicki Atwood, Director of Operations

Nicki hails from Baltimore and studied Physics and Chemistry at University of Richmond. While working with students in college, she noticed that many times students are held back because of a gap in their educational foundation and that drew her to Mathnasium’s unique approach. When not at Mathnasium, Nicki loves to visit different cities and hang out with her cat. In fact, she loves pets of all shapes and sizes, and has had many different types of pets, including a dog, a mouse, a rabbit, and even a hedgehog!

OwnerJames Temple, Owner

James developed a passion for and proficiency with Mathematics during his middle and high school years. In 2000, James graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Mathematics and a love for solving all types of problems. He took those skills into the United States Air Force where he served for 7 years as an aircraft maintenance officer. It was during these years that James had the opportunity to tutor home schooled children and really started to appreciate the frustration that many kids feel towards Mathematics. James left the Air Force in 2007 to go back to the University of Virginia where he received his Master's of Business Administration degree from the Darden School of Business.

Owner/Center DirectorJoAnn Temple, Owner

JoAnn became interested in the education of children while raising her four sons and assisting them with their homework. She obtained a degree in early childhood education while simultaneously working at an early intervention and rehab facility, which served children with special needs. There she was given many opportunities in varying positions within the agency. During this time she gained valuable knowledge and experience focusing on the development of young children. In more recent years she worked in an early childhood special education program and was also a substitute teacher in the public school system. Through these experiences she gained first hand knowledge of how frustrating it can be for teachers to try to meet the needs of all their students with limited resources and other constraints. Mathnasium represents an opportunity for James and JoAnn, as a mother and son team, to combine their complimentary experiences, education and fundamental values to help kids learn math.
