Keep the Brain Warm This Winter: Fun Indoor Maths Activities for Kids!

Jun 23, 2025

When the weather outside turns chilly and wet, it’s the perfect time to cosy up indoors and keep little minds active with some fun and creative maths activities!

These easy, no-fuss ideas will keep kids entertained, learning, and problem-solving – all without needing screens or fancy equipment. Grab a warm drink, clear the kitchen table or lounge room floor, and let the indoor maths fun begin!

1. DIY Maths Board Game 🎲

Turn an old board game into a maths challenge!

  • Use any game with dice or spinners.
  • Before moving your piece, you must solve a maths problem: addition, subtraction, multiplication – you choose the level!
  • Want to make it trickier? Roll two dice and multiply the numbers before you move!

2. Maths Baking Challenge 🍪

Baking is full of maths!

  • Get kids to measure, weigh, and count ingredients.
  • Double or halve the recipe for an extra challenge!
  • Ask questions like, "If we need 12 cookies but the recipe makes 8, how much more do we need to make?"

Delicious AND educational!

3. Indoor Shape Hunt 🔺⚪⬛

Challenge kids to find as many 2D and 3D shapes as possible around the house:
✔ Cylinders (cans, drink bottles)
✔ Cubes (boxes)
✔ Spheres (balls, marbles)
✔ Rectangles (books, tables)

They can sketch each shape they find or list how many they spot.

4. Puzzle Time 🧩

Jigsaw puzzles are great for spatial thinking and problem-solving.
For an extra maths twist:

  • Try puzzles with number or pattern designs.
  • Create your own puzzle by drawing a picture, cutting it into shapes, and solving it again!

5. Number Card Games ♠️♦️

A deck of cards can become endless maths games:

  • Addition War: Each player flips 2 cards and adds them. Highest total wins the round.
  • Multiplication Snap: Flip cards – if two cards multiply to make 12 (or another target number), snap them up!
  • Odd or Even Sort: Sort all the cards into odd and even piles as fast as possible.

6. Build with Blocks or LEGO® 🔧

Set maths-themed building challenges:

  • "Build a tower that’s exactly 20 blocks high."
  • "Make a symmetrical robot."
  • "Create a shape using only triangles."

A perfect way to mix creativity with counting, measuring, and geometry.

7. Create a Winter Weather Graph 📊

Track the weather each day: temperature, rain, sunshine or wind.
Make a simple bar or line graph to see how winter is shaping up – a great way to introduce data collection and interpretation.

(Make sure you label your axes and give your graph a title)
