Frequently Asked Questions
My child already excels in math. Will Mathnasium address their needs?
Absolutely. Since Mathnasium is customized for each student, we can help advanced students progress by introducing them to more challenging math topics and giving them more depth into areas they’ve already worked on. More importantly, we can also help your child to develop even stronger number fluency and critical thinking skills, which are essential for continued success in math.
Why do children struggle with math?
If you have ever watched a foreign movie without subtitles, you can begin to understand how confused and frustrated your child might be feeling in math class. If your child is missing key foundational math skills, it’s like not being able to understand the language.
In school, kids are all taught the same way because it’s the most efficient way for teachers to cover vast amounts of material in a short period of time. Plus, teachers are expected to prepare the kids for state standards tests on top of that. If your child doesn't get a chance to master a skill for whatever reason, there is no time to give them the attention they need. Teachers must move quickly to stay on schedule. As a result, we see too many kids fall behind in math.
And what happens next?
The class moves on! Here comes multiplication facts, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages, decimals, mixed numbers, exponents, ratios, divisibility rules, algebra, geometry, equations. Math is always building on itself and never slows down so your child can catch up! This can leave them feeling overwhelmed, embarrassed, and all alone. It’s tragic if they begin to expect and accept failure as their new normal and think "I'm just not good in math!" When they lose confidence in themselves, you may see all of their grades begin to suffer.
Think about this if you find yourself fighting with them to do their math homework. They may find it easier to fight with you and avoid the work than to put the effort into it only to see failure time and again. It’s a painful cycle -- and we can help end it for good.
Will a private math tutor work?
Unfortunately, in many cases private math tutoring is only a temporary fix for a long-term problem. Private math tutors often help children "survive" tonight's homework, but they don't address underlying foundational issues and math confidence. Private tutoring can be expensive and is rarely going to be the meaningful long-term solution that your child deserves.
How is Mathnasium different?
We sit down with them, put them at ease, and pick out a skills assessment
that doesn't feel too easy or too hard. Most importantly, we find out how they learn! Then we build their trust by giving them a few ideas and strategies that they can use immediately. We use the results to build a customized learning plan that targets gaps and weaknesses and quickly shows them success. In many cases success in math is something they have been craving!
Does Mathnasium really work?
Yes! Quite well. We get hundreds of glowing reviews about how struggling students come alive after spending time at Mathnasium. (Watch this video of a Mathnasium student describing her experience.) Their grades increase and their confidence does too. Read what your neighbors have to say about Mathnasium of Avon -- click the Results tab above
Will my child get 1-to-1 support at Mathnasium?
We provide one-on-one attention in a group setting that lets your child develop self-sufficiency and the confidence to try out their ideas without fear, and think through math problems themselves.
Our math Instructors are not average. We have brilliant, engaging, inspiring math experts who work one on one with your child to make sure they understand what to do and how to get started. Then the instructors step back and let your child work independently. This gives them the time to process this new information without the pressure and stress of being watched. It also prevents a "learned helplessness" where the student feels that they need the instructor over their shoulder all the time in order to be successful. (After all, we can't be there for their math tests!)
Our instructors frequently check in with each student to make sure they understand concepts, give them encouragement, and praise them for their efforts! If the student needs more math help we simply teach the lesson again in a different way without judgment until they "get it." We welcome questions and discussion from our students. This helps your child to become a confident, independent learner.
So call now (860) 785-6284 and let's get started!
