Our Team

Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting; our unique approach enables us to explain concepts really well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn! Read below to learn more about our talented team:

 Steve Laurenz, Assistant 

Steve is delighted to be at the Buffalo Grove Mathnasium Center. His passion for STEM education runs deep. Steve has been interested in science and math since early in life, and earned a BS in Microbiology and an MS in Chemical Engineering.  Steve eventually transitioned to a career as the Global Product Development Director for a pharmaceutical company. After retirement, he became the Center Director for the Mount Prospect Center and then had the opportunity to join the Buffalo Grove Center.  
Steve is married with three grown children. He fondly remembers volunteering as an instructor at their science Olympiad programs. Steve is currently a board member of a lake association, and a trained butterfly and frog monitor to help support our local forest preserves.
Math has become an increasingly vital skill in our data-oriented society, and Steve is proud to support the kids in our community to excel in math! Whether a child needs additional support or is looking for enrichment, Steve knows our Mathnasium Center can take them to the level they need to be!

 

Jerry Novit, Lead Instructor

Jerry graduated with honors from the University of IL, Urbana-Champaign with a BS in Finance.  He returned to National Louis University after gaining 15 years of experience in the business industry, to pursue his true calling in education.  He earned an MA in Teaching with a concentration in grades 6-12 mathematics.  Jerry has shared his passion for education with his students as a Special Education Program Aide, Substitute Teacher, Classroom Teacher and for 10 years as a Private Mathematics Instructor.  He loves all animals, especially his 2 dogs and cat.  In his free time he takes his dogs for walks to the dog park.  Cooking, traveling, watching movies and SUSHI are his other interests!  Jerry is a firm believer that each student is a unique learner and as an instructor, tailors his approach to address these unique learning needs.  He is passionate about math, but even more passionate about TEACHING using a combination of techniques so that each student can succeed in mathematics. 

 

Sabah Sulaiman,  Instructor

Sabah Sulaiman is an undergraduate freshman at DePaul University. She is on the pre-med track and intends to study health sciences. If Sabah is not working on her homework, then you can catch her curled up in her bed, enjoying a good book. She loves to spend time with her family, traveling, eating, shopping, and even just relaxing at home. She takes on the responsibility of teaching and being the role model of her three younger siblings. It can be said with no doubt that she has lots of hands on experience with children. Aside from sciences, Sabah’s favorite subject growing up was(and still is) math. She even contemplated about majoring in it. Sabah was a high school peer tutor and is looking forward to helping students at Mathnasium. 

 

 

 

 Abinaya Ramanarayanan, Instructor

 Abinaya has completed Bachelors and Masters in Applied Electronics. She has been passionate about math from a young age and believes that math and life parallel lines. By working at Mathnasium she would like to help learners understand that is not the ugly duckling but a beautiful swan waiting to be discovered. She can connect to the learners at a personal level as she has two kids and loves playing /exploring math from their view.

 

 

Jenna Szydlowski, Instructor

Jenna is Junior at Buffalo Grove High School where has been involved in her high school theater including “Monty Python’s Spamalot”, “Comedy Sportz”, and their upcoming fall play “Too Much Light Makes the Baby go Blind”. Additionally, she is involved in the Science Olympiad, the community service club,  a BGHS student council representative and has been elected Corresponding Secretary of her student council for the year 2018-2018. Jenna also enjoys trying to teach herself the ukulele as well as spending time with friends and family. She enjoys being able to interact with students at Mathnasium and help them to form a math foundation and then progressing further into math curriculum in engaging ways. Among her many classes Jenna is currently taking AP Calculus BC and is beginning to look at and tour colleges. 

 

Helena Luuly Hoang, Instructor

 Helena is a senior at Stevenson High School. Math has always been her favorite subject. She is currently taking Calculus BC and AP Statistics at school and is involved in the Peer Tutors Club and Student Congress. Working at Mathnasium has inspired her to pursue a career as a secondary math teacher. She is planning on going to Illinois State University. Connecting with the kids and helping them improve in their math skills at Mathnasium is a highlight of her day.

 

Sanya Bawa, Instructor

Sanya is a senior at Adlai E. Stevenson High School. She is attending Johns Hopkins University in the fall of 2020 to study Public Health on the pre-med track. She fences competitively at the national level and is fencing at Hopkins. She is involved in National Honors Society, peer tutoring in math and science, and spends her time singing classical Indian music on the weekends. She has completed AP math and science courses throughout her years at Stevenson and loves working with kids at Mathnasium and putting smiles on their faces. 

 
 

 

 

. Hailey Szydlowski, Instructor (College Breaks & Summer)

Hailey is headed back for her Sophomore year at The University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, IL.  She will continue her studies in the College of Education studying middles grade education with a concentration in mathematics.  Working at Mathnasium is excellent practice for her future profession, and it has even influenced her career choice.  Hailey’s favorite thing about working with the students at Mathnasium is catching up with them on a daily basis and hearing about their days at school or camp.  Have a great time at school Hailey…we will miss you and look forward to connecting over your breaks!
