CenterDirectorBetsy Washburn, Owner and Center Director

Betsy grew up in Glendale, Arizona, and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Business Management from Arizona State University.  In 1995, Betsy moved to Southeast Missouri where she obtained her teaching certificate and began teaching junior high and high school mathematics.  Betsy has 11 years classroom experience in teaching mathematics and has a passion for helping students find success in math.  Betsy has also earned a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governor’s University.

While in Kansas City, Missouri, Betsy was lucky to be the Center Director for Mathnasium of Blue Valley, a very successful center in Overland Park, KS.  This experience fueled a strong passion for the Mathnasium method and helping students make sense of math.

Betsy has two grown children, Cole and Riley.  They, as a family, recently returned to the Phoenix area and love it.  In her spare time, Betsy loves to read, travel, spend time with her family.

Tammie Yoakum, Co-Owner and Center Director

Hello, my name is Tammie Yoakum, and I few up in Glendale with my sister/co-owner, Betsy.  Before I started working in the center fulltime, I had a 30-year career in the premium finance industry.  I was blessed to have that career, but Mathnasium is a ton more fun.  The best part of being at Mathnasium is to see the "aha" moments and to see a students confidence grow.  When I'm not working, I like spending time with my family and friends.  I also love music, movies, reading and traveling.

Mary Savidge, Assistant Center Director

Hello, my name is Mary Savidge.  I am a retired Math teacher.  I love Math and how logical it is.  I love children and watching them figure things out.  Mathnasium combines both of those and I am grateful to be the Assistant Director and instructor. The atmosphere at the Mathnasium center is positive, fun, and exciting.  A perfect learning environment.

Vishesh Kumar, Lead Instructor

I have always loved math; being an instructor has allowed me to spread that love and help my students.  It was with the support of my teachers and tutors that I have been able to excel at math.  Now I help others achieve their own mathematical goals. In my spare time, I like to run and play soccer.

Colin McConnon, Lead Instructor

Throughout school, math and physics have always been my favorite subjects. Working through a problem and getting an answer that can be used to figure out how things work in the real world has always interested me greatly. Mathnasium fits in really well with that interest because every day there are kids there that are willing to learn and appreciate math as well. I just finished my first year at Florida State University, where I am double majoring in Astrophysics and Pure Math. I also love to play tennis and basketball.

Aliya Carrera, Lead Instructor

Hi! My name is Aliya Carrera and I currently attend Pinnacle High School.  I love math because it's always been a subject that has made me more confident in school.  Mathnasium has been the perfect opportunity for me to continue growing my love for math and to pass it on. In my free time, I love to hangout with friends and also play soccer.

Alyssa Belpedio, Instructor

Hello, I'm Alyssa Belpedio, and I am currently studying Electrical Engineering at Grand Canyon University.  Before transferring to GCU, I earned two Associates degrees at Paradise Valley Community College. I am a returning instructor at Mathnasium and I love helping kids to see the beauty and purpose behind math. In my free time, I enjoy painting, sewing, and hanging out with friends.

Blake Kerr, Instructor

Hi! My name is Blake Kerr.  When Mathnasium was first recommended to me, I knew it would be a good experience that could improve my life for the better.  I get to interact with others, while also getting to develop important skills such as communication and problem solving.  One big hobby of mine is robotics, which relies heavily on math.  It is always nice to see how math can be used outside of the classroom, similarly to how I use math in robotics.  At mathnasium I can help others come to develop an appreciation for math just like I have, and think about it as an important skill rather than just a class in school.

Hudson Roddy, Instructor

Hello, my name is Hudson Roddy, and I am currently a sophomore at Pinnacle High School.  I came to Mathnasium because I have always had a love for math and teaching kids.  I had heard of their process and teaching methods and knew that it would be a perfect fit for me.  I thought of my favorite teachers, and how they helped me learn, and I wanted to share that experience with others.  Some of my hobbies and interests include robotics, reading, and spending time with friends.

Lillian Urena, Instructor

Hi. My name is Lillian Urena, and I'm a junior at Basis Phoenix. I've tutored math for three years now and I've always loved to help others understand math. In my free time I love to draw and play instruments.

Kameron Cochrane, Instructor

Hello! My name is Kameron Cochrane. Math has always been a fascinating and useful subject for me in school, so I decided to join the Mathnasium team to help share the world of mathematics to kins in fun and interactive ways. Besides my studies, I am involved in theater, biological research and volunteering for a variety of organizations.

Jonathan Nguyen, Instructor

Greetings! My name is Jonathan Nguyen and I graduated with a B.S. in Biology at the University of California, Riverside. While I was attending UCR, my intentions were to become a pharmacist but then during my junior year, I truly found my passion in teaching! I have experience teaching math and sciences along with ESL (English Second Language). There’s nothing more gratifying than having a student understand the concepts and ideas that I teach them. So I am now with Mathnasium of Desert Ridge to solidify and enhance my teaching abilities to ensure that our students will get the best instruction that we can provide! During my free time, I love to play guitar, watch anime, work out at the gym, and occasionally create lovers of songs that I love to listen to.

Vidhi Pathak, Instructor

Hi! My name is Vidhi Pathak and I am a student at BASIS Phoenix. I have recently developed a love for mathematics and would like to share that love for learning with my students. I love teaching because it allows me to inspire others and change their lives for the better. In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, and creating my Beyond the Books podcast.

Chelsea Leoni, Instructor

I have always had a strong passion for learning, which is why I got my Bachelor's degree in Secondary Math Education from NAU and my Master's degree in Secondary Education from GCU. I like how math feels like a big puzzle, but I really developed a deeper appreciation for math when I discovered my bigger joy for teaching it, which I've done at the high school level for 7 years. I know math is a huge struggle for many students so I love helping kids learn that they, too, can do math and even enjoy it. When I'm not busy teaching, I love going on food adventures, reading, drinking copious amounts of coffee, and working out.

Vipul Gupta, Instructor

Hello I am Vipul Gupta, and I am currently a senior at Paradise Valley. My first encounter with Mathnasium was actually as a student and I can confidently say the instructors are some of the most caring and knowledgeable people you will ever meet. I love knowing that I have a part in a student’s new found confidence and understanding. I like watching movies and making scale models in my free time.

Sareena Gupta, Instructor

Hi :D! My name is Sareena Gupta, and I am a sophomore at Pinnacle High School. I have always loved math and science, especially Algebra. My first experience at Mathnasium was as a student. I loved the positive energy and kindess of everyone at the center and I am so excited to be working there as well. I hope to help students feel more confident and secure in their math skills. Anything related to theatre, singing, acting, dancing, I'm there. I am also on my high school's swim team even though I'm not very good at it.

Adam Gramlich, Instructor

Hello! My name is Adam, and I am currently a sophomore at Pinnacle High School. Math has always been my favorite subject in school, and my experience with Mathnasium dates back to when I entered the first grade. They provided enrichment opportunity for me and help for my sister, so I am very excited to be a part of connecting other students to that experience as well. My hobbies include gaming and basketball as I am currently slated to represent the JV pinnacle squad this upcoming season.

Ella McConnon, Instructor

Hi! My name is Ella McConnon and I am currently a senior at Cactus Shadows High School. I’ve always enjoyed math because of the confidence boost I get when a concept finally “clicks”. Math is like a big puzzle and I’m excited to be working with students to help solve it. In my free time I like to swim, draw, and listen to music.

Bernice Irudaya, Instructor

Hey! My name is Bernice Irudaya, and I'm a sophomore at Paradise Valley High School.  I felt Mathnasium was where I would thrive becuase of my curiosity for math and also my ability to work with people in general.  I also enjoy a wide variety of things like music, karate, theatre, biology and anything artistic.  I'm also always down to try new things!

Arshiya Alwadi, Instructor

My name is Arshiya Alwadi, and I am a senior at BASIS Phoenix.  I love math and find it so important because it improves our problem solving skills and critical thinking. And for the past few years, I have been tutoring students at various science and math levels. I  joined the Mathnasium team because this opportunity gives me a chance to combine my interest in math and my love for teaching.  In my free time, I love to read and play the piano.

Josie Pipatanangkura, Instructor

My name is Josie and I attend BASIS Phoenix. In my opinion, mathematics can be a frustrating and repetitive subject, but with the right approach it can evove into something enjoyable. When a student succeeds, I feel as if I have succeeded as well. Apart from academics, I love a good book or movie to get lost in.

Aruna Sreenivasan, Instructor

My name is Aruna, and I'm a senior at BASIS Phoenix.  I've always loved math as a kid, and even now in high school, when it got much harder.  I still enjoy the feeling of satisfaction I get when I work through a hard problem.  I hope that our students will be able to develop an appreciation for math through their sessions with us! In my free time, I love to read and create chainmaille jewelry.
