Jan 13, 2023 | Ann Arbor

Today you’ll get a glimpse into the happenings of your local center as we follow students through their first experience at Mathnasium of Ann Arbor.

Q: What is the first thing a brand new student does at your center?

A: A brand new student would get a binder that has been tailor-made for him/her based on a comprehensive assessment test they completed prior to enrollment, and will be able to decorate the binder spine to make it look nice and truly their own.

Q: What is the comprehensive assessment? How long does it take to finish?

A: As one of the most critical steps in the Mathnasium Method, our comprehensive assessment tests are designed to measure students' math skills for all levels of K-12 math topics. They help us pinpoint exactly what the students strength and weakness areas are, so we can provide students with the most appropriate learning plans and instructions and help them fill gaps in a very efficient way and build a strong foundation for math success.

Q: How often should I bring my student to Mathnasium of Ann Arbor?

A: For our regular year round program, most students come twice a week for 1 hour-long sessions. However, we also have once a week or three times a week options that some students prefer. In addition, we offer 12- or 20- session flexible summer packages good for June-September.

Q: Who are the people teaching my child?

A: We have 16 highly skilled and friendly instructors who love math and love working with children. Most of our instructors are current University of Michigan students, we also have a retired engineer and an instructor with high school science teaching-certificate among our teaching staff, plus several high-achieving current high schoolers who have developed mastery for k-12 math topics from being our own Mathnasium students in the past.

Q: When can I bring my child into Mathnasium of Ann Arbor?

A: We open Mon-Thursday 3:30-7:30 pm, and Saturday morning 9 am- 1 pm. We do hard scheduling to ensure good instructor to student ratio, but you can choose your preferred lesson days and times, and you will have flexibility to change session schedules each week. We also allow change requests with >24 hr notice during the week as needed.

Q: How do you motivate your students at Mathnasium of Ann Arbor?

A: We make sure that the students have a positive experience at the center every time they come in. We have a reward cabinet filled with prizes they can earn by getting stars and star cards for their math work. We also have drawings for perfect mastery checks or school grade of A. The most important reward the students (and the parents get) is their happier and more positive attitude toward doing math and math homework, as well as getting better grades from school!
