Q: What is the first thing a new student would do upon entering Mathnasium?
A: We are super excited to have our new students join the family at our Brandon center. We welcome them with a BIG smile, show them how to sign in on our tablets, help them find their binder on the shelf and walk them to meet their instructor. Upon meeting their instructor, they will be introduced to the center, their binder and the friends around them.
Q: What does the first session look like for new students?
A: Our Mathletes' first session at the center is meant to allow them to feel comfortable with their surroundings, understand what their time with us will look like, an opportunity to begin working on their new math binder, receive help with any homework they have brought along, with lots of high fives and smiles! Our mission is to see that Mathlete smile, feel comfortable and leave excited about their time with us at Mathnasium.
Q: Have you seen a student’s attitude towards math change?
A: Our student J, who is in 8th grade Alg 1 came to us beyond frustrated, feeling very discouraged and not wanting to even look at a math problem. After a few sessions with us, we noticed that J was coming in with a smile, was more comfortable asking questions, and feeling much more confident in what he was doing. We are two months in with his membership, and he is now getting A's and B's. We are very excited to see how he does on his Alg EOC. We believe his hard work, dedication and willingness to ask questions, along with the patient support of his instructors have made a huge difference in J's life! We are so proud of him.
Q: What do you wish students and parents knew before they brought their student to your center?
A: We asked Ms Becky what she wishes that students and parents understood before they bring their student to the center, and her response was nothing mind- blowing. Her response was students could understand that math is not something to be afraid of, but that math can be something they can be successful at, with some consistency, practice, and not being afraid to try or ask questions. Our minds are like muscles, the more we practice, the better we will be. Mathnasium is a safe place to make mistakes and ask questions because our goal is always for students to leave with a better understanding of math, so they can be confident walking into their math classroom!
