Tips for Re-motivating Your Child

Jun 16, 2021 | Bryan

By now we all know the summer slide is real, but now we must identify the other ways that this past year has affected our students. Many sources have reported that children’s level of anxiety, stress, and isolation have significantly increased within the last year.

We know that caring of and restoring your children’s emotional well-being after this unprecedented time is your first priority. As it is ours, which is why we try to make math fun! The following four tips were recommended at the beginning of this pandemic to help motivate your child to approach math with confidence, and now, with a little twist, they will help them get back on track after what has proven to be a tough year for everyone:

Find community.

In the last year, kids have missed out on a lot of time with peers. Try to foster relationships with fellow Mathnasium members and consider carpooling with other Mathnasium attendees. Rebuilding a community can offer your child a renewed sense of excitement and motivation when tackling math and all other things.

Compliment and affirm.

Take note of positive learning moments and celebrate them with your child.

Celebrate the creative spirit.

With younger kids consider using chalk to demonstrate one thing that was learned that day, or host a show-and-tell with your family when your student earns a reward at Mathnasium.

Take breaks.

Once your child has completed their session, whether in-center or @home, take deep breaths together and relax by browsing a book or telling family stories. This moment of relaxation supports children’s brain development and is beneficial for parents and caregivers as well!
