As the new school year gets into full swing, we have been having wonderful conversations with local parents across our center. The transition from summer relaxing back into early-morning routines and nightly homework can be challenging for any family—and math, in particular, tends to bring out the biggest anxieties.
Whether you are trying to smooth out homework battles or keep your child on top of new concepts, here is a look at what we are seeing in the classroom right now, along with practical tips to help your child thrive this fall.
What Parents Are Telling Us Right Now
Now that school is back in session, the most common thing we hear from parents is a desire to prevent their child from falling behind. Many families noticed their kids losing math confidence toward the end of last year, and nightly homework assignments are already causing frustration at the dinner table.
Parents want a fresh start this year—a way to help their children approach math with confidence rather than anxiety.
Common Early-Fall Math Struggles
In the first few weeks of school, teachers quickly begin introducing new grade-level material. When foundational skills from previous years aren't fully solid, those gaps start to show up right away:
Foundational Skill Gaps: Key concepts like fractions, multiplication fluency, or place value from earlier grades didn't fully stick.
Algebra Readiness Challenges: Older students are stepping into higher-level math concepts without the core arithmetic foundation needed to solve multi-step problems smoothly.
The "Math Person" Myth: Kids who hit an early hurdle begin to internalize it, telling themselves, "I’m just not good at math."
Our Top Advice for Parents This Fall
If you notice your child struggling or growing frustrated with homework during these first few weeks, don't wait for a bad grade or a disappointing report card to take action.
Small math gaps in September or October are significantly easier and less stressful to address than compounding gaps in January. Getting support early gives your child the tools and confidence they need before they feel overwhelmed. Most importantly, remind your child to celebrate effort and growth rather than focusing on whether they are naturally "good at math."
