Mathnasium Of Canyon Country Aims To ‘Make Math Make Sense’ For Students K-12

Mathnasium of Canyon Country staff are striving to “make math make sense” for students who may be struggling with the subject from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.

While Mathnasium was first created in 2002, the Santa Clarita math tutoring center recently opened in August, according to Owner and Center Director Q Reed.

“It’s not that you hate math, you just hate that you don’t understand it, and it can be very, very frustrating and very hard,” said Reed. “So we take that away and we make math fun… We make math make sense.”

Mathnasium of Canyon Country currently has six tutors on staff, who utilize the “Mathnasium Method” to help students understand various math concepts rather than just memorize them, according to Reed.

Students begin with an assessment so Mathnasium staff can create a learning plan for them.

“There is no pressure — it’s just for us to find out where they are and where all the holes are in their learning, why they’re struggling,” Reed said. “Then they come in … and they catch up and they fill in all those gaps. It’s amazing.”

The math tutoring center in Santa Clarita features both individual tutoring and “team teaching,” which Reed described as “a Mathnasium staple.”

“The kids come in and they sit at their desks, and the tutors come and they get them started, and then they will get up and walk away and let the students independently work,” she said. “It’s really great because it really does teach the kids how to work on their own.”

While students new to Mathnasium of Canyon Country may be hesitant to begin their tutoring at first, Reed noted that their attitude usually changes for the better after their first few sessions.

“I love to see their faces go from frowns to super happy faces when they walk in,” she said. “The kids actually love coming. They love it. They all come with a smile on their face. They’re all happy to be there.”
