A month into the school year now, and conversations with Chanhassen families are starting to settle into a pattern. A lot of parents are trying to figure out if what they're seeing is just normal back to school adjustment, or if their child is actually carrying a struggle over from last year. Homework has become a bigger topic too, not just whether it gets done, but whether their kid actually understands what they're doing. And confidence keeps coming up. A student can know more math than they think, but once I'm bad at math becomes part of how they see themselves, that mindset turns into its own obstacle.
Right now the material kids are learning is exposing gaps that have been sitting there a while. Fractions, multiplication and division fluency, order of operations, multi step problems, early algebra, all of it keeps coming up. With my older students especially, a shaky algebra foundation tends to ripple out and affect several areas at once, which is part of why everything can suddenly feel harder.
My advice to Chanhassen parents this month is don't wait for a bad report card to decide something needs attention. If your child is already frustrated, spending way more time than expected on homework, or telling you they just don't get math, that's your signal to act now while the gap is still small. Consistent support early in the year heads off a lot of frustration later.
Two things going on at the center worth mentioning. We're running a student raffle this fall to help keep our school and teacher contact information current. Sounds small, but it makes a real difference in how connected we can stay to the schools our students come from. And starting October 1, we're launching a Dungeons and Dragons program, meeting every other week, open to both our students and the public. It's a little outside our usual lane, but D&D is genuinely great for problem solving, teamwork, communication, and yes, even math, without it feeling like another lesson.
We work with families all over Chanhassen and Chaska, and my goal is for this place to be more than somewhere kids come for tutoring. The D&D nights are one way we're giving local students a reason to connect outside of the regular school day.
