Here at Mathnasium, we pride ourselves on working closely with families to create learning plans and goals that work! This means taking an individualized, malleable, 1:1 approach to each student.
We start this process by having students take a grade-level appropriate assessment, which includes testing on multiplication tables, basic number sense and computational skills. These assessments help us create a foundation for the student -- what are their current strengths? What are math skills they find to be easy? What skills are more difficult for them to grasp -- or what we tend to call, "gaps"?
By implementing assessments, we are essentially laying down the brickwork for all future math learning. After identifying the student's strengths and weaknesses, we create a Learning Plan to tackle each student's deficits in math.
From here, we teach math topics step-by-step, and in a way that feels approachable to students -- we take what they already know and chip away at topics that are unfamiliar or challenging to them. For example, we take a student's existing knowledge of factors and use it as a foundation to teach them how to reduce fractions.
But assessments can also be a good learning opportunity for parents, to help you understand where your student is at in terms of understanding their grade-level curriculum. Is your child in need of enrichment or review, or do their issues with math extend to years prior?
Regardless, assessments are a great way to set your student up for success at Mathnasium of Chula Vista! Call today to schedule your FREE one-hour session!
