We meet many parents and students who find homework time to be the most stressful part of math class. From parents who help their students during homework time to those whose students work best independently, math homework can be incredibly frustrating and cause tension and stress at home as well, especially if math time leaves everyone in the family feeling helpless.
The learning center environment of Mathnasium can help alleviate stress not just for students struggling in math, but also their families! At home, students can be overwhelmed by the distractions and lack of structure - pets, siblings, social media, technology, toys, video games, and music can all distract from a student's focus and retention of concepts (no matter how much and how fervently they argue that they're "good" at multitasking).
At Mathnasium, we as a math-only learning center means we can very effectively establish student expectations of what we come here to do, and therefore it can be easier to focus fully and avoid distractions. Having a safe space to work through our frustrations with math also means students feel comfortable to ask questions, express their needs and move forward with their academic goals away from the mental block many of them have in math. This takes the stress out of studying at home, both from students and parents. After all, they have developed the confidence to at least attempt to tackle these math problems on their own, and they can do so confidently, with the knowledge that if they do hit a roadblock or speed bump, they have their neighborhood math experts at their disposal anytime (we offer flexible drop-in hours to even remove the stress of scheduling)!
Just like students internalize their math struggles and equate those difficulties to being incompetent or inadequate, many parents' confidence have been shaken by math frustrations as well, and we hear often how both the parents and student(s) feel as if a weight has been lifted from them.
