Today you’ll get a glimpse into the happenings of your local center as we follow students through their first experience at Mathnasium of Crystal Lake.

Q: What is the first thing a brand new student does at your center?

A: Decorate their binder to make it their own. Learn how the Binder works.

Q: What is the comprehensive assessment? How long does it take to finish?

A: A comprehensive assessment is a verbal and written assessment combined to evaluate the students current math understanding. Math is foundational, and most of the time when students are struggling with math, it is because there is a hole in their foundational understanding. The comprehensive assessment helps us fine those holes, in which we build a customized learning plan for the student to start filling in those gaps in their knowledge.

Q: When can I bring my child into Mathnasium of Crystal Lake?

A: If you are currently enrolled at Mathnasium, you can set up sessions during any time of the week we are open. We are very flexible with scheduling and rescheduling. If you are trying to set up an assessment or free trial, that can be during any time we are open that we don't already have an appointment of that type. We are also open on Sunday's for families that are very busy during the week.

Q: How do you motivate your students at Mathnasium of Crystal Lake?

A: At Mathnasium we believe in positive reinforcement as a means to motivate students. We have a rewards cabinet so that students can work on their math as a way of reaching a goal of saving up enough rewards cards to purchase whatever they would like. We have a brag board for students to show off their high test scores on their math tests. We also make a point of telling a student they did a good job whenever they get anything correct. We believe confidence is key in math, and if a student doesn't believe they can do their math, then it is going to be that much more difficult for them. We like to remind them every chance we get, that they are smart, they are capable, and they can do this.
