Here at Mathnasium, we get it. Multiplication can be a struggle, not only for your child, but for parents too! It’s never fun to watch our children struggle and fight to solve problems. And it’s definitely not fun when they become discouraged and have an aversion to doing their math work.
What can you do to help? Here is a fun Multiplication game you can play with them.

Multiplication War:
2 player game
Materials needed:
Deck of cards
Instructions:
-
Shuffle deck of cards.
-
Assign face cards a value of 10. Assign Ace a value of 1 or 11. Make this clear at the beginning of the game.
-
Deal the deck out so each player has ½ the deck.
-
Each player draws 2 cards from their deck.
-
If you draw a 6 and a 3 you say 6 x 3 = 18. If your child drew a 7 and a 9 they would say 7 x9 = 63. Since 63 is higher than 18 your child takes all 4 cards and places them on the bottom of their deck.
-
Continue playing until one player has all of the cards.
-
Alternative: Play using a timer. After ten minutes, see who has the most card. They are the winner.
-
Alternative: If you want to practice specific number multiplication, pull the number value (say 6) out of the deck, and each player pulls one card and answers the multiplication fact.
-
Enjoy watching your child grow with their multiplication skills!
-
Remember, do not get frustrated if they do not understand, but help them to see what the answer is!
