Q1: What types of progress have you seen students make this summer?

A1: Without the daily pressures of school grades, homework, and rigid pacing, students are able to progress during the summer by focusing entirely on understanding concepts deeply. Without new topics being introduced every week, students can spend time repairing gaps and strengthening foundational skills needed to be successful in more advanced classes, which in turn, builds confidence and independence.

Q2: How does your center help students stay motivated and engaged during the summer months?

A2: We help students stay motivated and engaged during the summer in a variety of ways. We offer a dedicated game time that students have the option of attending. We play math and strategy-building games, some family favorites like Checkers and Uno, as well as, introducing them to new games they may not know like Qwirkle and Otrio. We offer some summer-specific rewards including Popsicle Day and earning an ice cream party! We also sprinkle in daily activities to correlate with national events. This year, we have daily soccer activities to celebrate The World Cup!

Q3: Why is summer such a valuable time for building confidence in math?

A3: When students learn at their own pace, without the pressures of daily homework and upcoming tests, they experience more "lightbulb" moments. Their mindset moves from "I don't know how " to "I am learning this" to "I got this!" And with more one-to-one time, during the summer, math work feels more like a collaboration rather than an isolated chore.
