If you have a certain amount of money and you want to go grocery shopping, you have to be careful to get the most important items on your shopping list so that you do not exceed your budget.

Question: Maria has $45.00 to spend on groceries. She already has the following items in her cart: 3 boxes of cookies that cost $1.95 each, 2 bags of chips that cost $2.39 each, one gallon of milk that costs $3.99, and a loaf of bread that costs $4.59. How much money does Maria have left to spend on other groceries that are on her shopping list?

Solution: Add all the items that Maria has already in her shopping cart:

Step 1: 3 x $1.95 + 2 x $2.39 + 3.99 + $4.59 = $ 19.21 (dont forget to follow the Order of Operations).

Step 2: $45 - $19.21 =  $25.79.

So Maria can spend only $25.79 on the other items on her grocery list
