Using Math while Cooking

Nov 30, 2018 | Hancock Park

Cooking is a good opportunity for kids to practice math: measurement, conversion between units, and using the four operations.
Try to solve the problem below:

Problem: Lisa makes 3 pints of jello and divides it into 4 servings. How many cups of jello are in each serving?

Solution: A pint is 2 cups, so 3 pints is 3 × 2 = 6 cups. Divide 6 cups among 4 servings, we get 1 cup with a remainder of 2. As a mixed number we write the answer as 1 2/4 or 1 1/2. Therefore each serving is 1½ cups of jello.
