As we approach Christmas this weekend, we wanted to wish you Happy Holidays from Mathnasium of Huntington Beach. What better way to celebrate than for us to give you some tips and tricks on how to find half of odd numbers.
In order to find half of odd numbers, we have to break the odd number we’re working with into two parts. The reason we do this is so we can work with an even number which is much easier to find half of. To simply do this, subtract 1 from our odd number. Then take half of the even number we just found and half of 1 and add the two together.
Let’s look at an example. What is half of 41? Well first, we will break this number into two parts. One part being an even number and the next being 1. To do so, simply subtract 1 from 41 to get 40. Now find half of both parts and add them together. Half of 40 is 20 and half of 1 is ½. So half of 41 is 20 ½.
Still not entirely sure how we calculated half of 41, well let’s look at a more simple example. What is half of 7? Subtracting 1 from 7, we get that our two parts are 6 and 1. Now, find half of 6 and half of 1 and add them together. So, half of 6 is 3 and half of 1 is ½. So, half of 7 is 3 ½.
