Have you noticed your student struggling with adding non-multiples of 10? Well look no further! Keep reading to see ways in which Mathnasium helps our students understand addition over multiples 10.
Let’s say we are trying to calculate what 44 + 8 is. First, we will look at 44 and figure out what number added to it is equal to 50. In other words, 44 plus what number equals 50. This answer is 6. Now we take the 6 we just found and subtract it from what we originally wanted to add to 44. So, 8 - 6 is 2. Now add this to 50. 50 + 2 = 52, which means that 44 + 8 is 52.
This may seem a bit confusing at first, but we call this method adding up to and over 10. This is accomplished by splitting up our addend into two parts in order to complete the next multiple of ten, then add what is left over.
Let’s look at another example. In order to calculate 87 + 6, we first need to find out how much it would take us to get to the next multiple of ten. So, 87 and what number would give you 90. This answer is 3. Now take this 3 we found and subtract from our original addend. So, 6 - 3 = 3. Now simply add to 90. 90 + 3 = 93, so 87 + 6 is 93.
Look in the image above for another example, and see if your student can figure out exactly what it means to go up to and over 10.
