Preparing for Parent / Teacher Conferences

Nov 13, 2020 | Huntington Beach

Fall semester is in full gear which means parent/teacher conferences are right around the corner. Your child's teacher works with them throughout the whole school year so they have identified their strengths and weaknesses and this meeting is a crucial touchpoint for them to share this information with you. Since this touchpoint will determine the need of your child for their success in the school year, we are here to assist with preparing for the upcoming parent/teacher conferences. These are some questions you should be asking the teacher to gather as much useful information as possible:

1. Curriculum

What material has my chil already covered? What material is still left to learn? How has my child transitioned from last year's curriculum? Has my child excelled or struggled with any of the curriculum?

It is vital that you know what your child is currently learning and what they will be learning in the school year. This gives you the advantage of anticipating their need at different times of the year and if they will need supplemental support to get through the more rigorous concepts. Many students are still struggling to get into a routine so understanding the concepts they are working on, can also help you assist them in structuring their time outside of school hours.

2. Homework/Quizzes/Tests

How often does my child have a homework assignment or a scheduled test or quiz? Is ll the homework being turned in on time? Is the homework correct? How is my child performing on tests and quizzes? Do you recommend more time for them to study? Have you identified any possible signs of testing anxiety?

Homework, tests, and quizzes can be a detrimental part of your child's overall grade. Some students may be confused on the concepts and some might experience feelings of anxiety which prevents them from achieving their full potential. Since your child's teacher grades their assignments, they have deeper insight on any potential signs of them struggling and give you an opportunity to intervene.

3. Motivation & Confidence

Is my child feeling confident and staying motivated? Are they asking questions when they need help and participating in class?

Since the transition to remote learning, many students confidence levels and motivation have been impacted since they are lacking the in-person engagement they usually receive with their teachers. It is important to know where your child's motivation level is and if you need to seek assistance to build up their math skills which will then increase their confidence. Identifying if your child struggles with motivation or confidence is vital for their success.

4. Customized Support with an Individual Approach

How can I support my child with the feedback received from the teacher? What local resources do I have available to support me and my child?

It is important for you as the parent to find a resource outside of school to support you in supporting your child. The stronger a support team your child has, they have a bigger opportunity for growth. Mathnasium understands the hard work educators and parents put into supporting their students and we are here to add an additional team member for your child. Our math learning center focuses on building and strengthening your child’s math foundations, skills, and confidence. We will review the feedback you obtained from your meeting and partner together to create a customized learning plan for your child’s success.
