Mathnasium of Kalorama's personalized algebra tutoring programs are designed to support students at every stage of their math journey.
We help students transition from concrete to abstract thinking, mastering integers, fractions, order of operations, and introductory variables while building the algebraic reasoning needed for Algebra 1.
Our caring tutors guide students through multi-step equations, linear functions, graphing, and word problems using personalized plans that turn this pivotal course into a confident foundation for future math success.
We support students with fast-paced, complex topics—factoring polynomials, quadratics, exponentials, and logarithms—building advanced problem-solving skills needed for Precalculus and college-prep coursework.
At Mathnasium of Kalorama, our specially trained math tutors help students of all skill levels learn and master algebra. We support students in Prealgebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2, as well as topics like expressions, equations, functions, graphing, polynomials, and exponential relationships.
We provide personalized, face-to-face instruction in a caring and fun group environment. Our tutors use clear, everyday language, meet students where they are, and guide them step by step so algebra feels understandable and confidence-building.
We use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand how algebra works while strengthening critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Our tutors combine proven interactive techniques with personalized learning plans tailored to each student’s needs and learning style. This makes algebra clear, meaningful, and easier to apply both in class and in real-world situations.
Students’ Mathnasium journey begins with a diagnostic assessment that helps us identify their current skills, learning gaps, and goals. Using these insights, we create a personalized learning plan that focuses on exactly what each student needs, whether they need to catch up, keep up, or get ahead.
With the plan in place, our tutors deliver targeted, supportive instruction, adapting in real time to the student’s learning style. This approach helps students fill knowledge gaps, strengthen foundational skills, and build lasting confidence as they progress through algebra.

Riss Mendizabal
Area Manager
My name is Riss Mendizabal! I was born in Matanzas, Cuba and grew up in Miami and graduated from Ransom Everglades. Education is something I have always been passionate about. As a former instructor for Breakthrough Miami, I know first hand the importance of a strong mathematical foundation in children's lives. In my off time, I enjoy cooking and spending time with my 7 year old lab, Lenny.
Jenny Colletti
Director of Education
Jenny has been part of the Mathnasium team since 2013 and is passionate about making math meaningful for every student. She holds a degree in Math and Sociology from the University of Miami and believes that students learn best when encouraged to find their own problem-solving approach.
Her favorite part of the job is watching confidence grow and seeing those “lightbulb” moments when a student finally connects with a tough concept. Jenny is committed to ensuring that every child feels supported and capable in their math journey.
Elizabeth Fraga
Director of Operations
Elizabeth brings both insight and heart to her role as Director of Operations at Mathnasium. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Florida International University and uses her understanding of how children think and learn to support effective instruction and team development across centers.
As a proud mom of two boys, Elizabeth knows firsthand the value of confidence-building education. Whether managing operations or creating a positive learning environment, she believes in the power of patience, encouragement, and a well-timed snack.
Laura Hamel
Owner
Laura is committed to making math approachable for every child. She holds a BS in Business from Wake Forest University and is raising three sons who remind her daily of the importance of education. She and her husband Jonathan opened their first Mathnasium center in 2014.
Since then, Laura has played a key role in creating welcoming learning spaces where families feel supported and students thrive. Her passion for helping children grow and succeed makes her a vital part of the Mathnasium mission.
Jonathan Hamel
Owner
Jonathan holds a BA in Economics from Wake Forest University and earned an International MBA through a joint program with the University of South Carolina and Wirtschaftuniversität Wien in Austria. With nearly two decades of experience in finance, he brings deep insight into the long-term value of strong math skills.
A runner and former lacrosse player, Jonathan sees math mastery much like athletic training—built through practice and discipline. He enjoys working with children and volunteers as a lacrosse coach for his sons' team, combining his love of education, sports, and community involvement.
