Girl Power in Math: Confidence is Key

Oct 25, 2017 | La Jolla

When our girls are young, we tell them they can do anything and they believe it! Become a princess or the president.  Somewhere along the way, they begin to question the reality of their options, and often the self imposed limits.

A recent student showed that when it comes to math and STEM options for girls, while they are more than capable, they lack to confidence to proceed. The focus was on high school girls in 10th - 12th graders and their opinions of themselves and their abilities. The kicker is they didn’t even have to do math!  The either agreed or disagreed with statements about how they feel about their performance.

Educating all students with a growth mindset is paramount! This is the ability to believe that you can learn and advance in math through your own education, rather than being born with a math gene! The earlier they learn this valuable idea the more doors will be open to them. Elementary school is perfect as all the foundational concepts take root here, but if your student is in middle school it isn’t too late. A little backtracking to build from a solid base is a good investment of their time.
