I Don't Need the Common Core! It's Useless!

Wow! That was straight out of an elementary student's mouth yesterday when her mom brought her in to see what we are all about. I was temporarily speechless - what is miracle in itself.  This young lady had heard this opinion before, probably many times, and has been influenced to think this way.  She has a minimum of seven years of math left in her life, trust me. It's not useless! It is math skills enveloped in the Common Core wrapping paper. Maybe we will call it something else ten years from now, but it is still MATH! Math isn't going anywhere, and if anything, it will be more an more present and intermingled in the future.

Yea, lot's of people hate the structure of Common Core lessons. Or they think the inflexibility of tonight's homework (which will be done this way today, but that way tomorrow) is beyond frustrating and cannot wrap their heads around "why" it has to be this way. We hear you! At Mathnasium, we like to build a mathematical toolbox with our students so their number sense becomes intuitive and the problem solving and bundling of skills makes this a nonissue.

While a third of the kids come to our center for enrichment, there are many like my new friend who don't see the point. Let us help them!  When things make sense attitudes change. Instead of hearing, "I don't need it. It's useless!" what I heard was, "Help me! I'm drowning in rules and procedures and none of this is making sense to me! I hate feeling this way!"

We have programs all year long!  In addition to teaching math skills for enrichment or support, we can help with homework when necessary.
