Math + Politics = Gerrymandering?

I love learning new things. Just when I thought I had a handle on most of the career possibilities with math that exist today, I am immediately reminded that I don't even know what I don't know.

Gerrymandering! What? I'm glad it wasn't on my SAT test, but, yeah, it's a thing. It's the intentional manipulation of voting districts to benefit a political party. So every time you hear about redistricting, there is mathematics behind it. Mathematicians use geometry to figure out those "ideal" lines that somehow have to strike a balance of being efficient, economical, demographically supportive, and hold its weight in the event of a courtroom challenge by any entity (party, constituents, etc) who may challenge it.
