Success On and Off the Field

When it comes to sports, our kids learn about discipline, loyalty, teamwork, loss, competition, among other things. Every family also has a limited amount of time, energy, and money.  It becomes a strategic balance of directing these resources to interests that maximize the needs and wants of our child(ren) for the short and long term.

The statistical likelihood of a student athlete progressing to the collegiate Division 1, 2 and 3 level is listed to the left. This comes straight from the NCAA website. The statistical likelihood of that same student encountering math at the same school is 100%.

Sooner or later something that starts off as an elementary school recreational activity transitions club teams in middle school. Club teams escalate to varisty in high school where looks from scouts begin, and dreams take shape. To the colleges, though, it's a business decision. Sports is a business. Colleges require their athletes to maintain a minimum grade level to sustain their participation. Poor grades impact eligibility and coaches offering scholarships don't want to be left with a short roster.

Math preparedness is essential while in school and for life. It starts young, when core foundational skills are acquired, and advances into accelerated coursework. Grabbing the eye of a coach due to success on and off the field can be the secret sauce that separates one student from the rest. This summer, in the off season, be sure to make those efforts to lock in a solid math grade and have your student prepared for the coming school year.
