Spaghetti Challenge!

Nov 21, 2018 | Lindon

If you happen to have a box of spaghetti in your pantry, try famed physicist Richard Feynman's kitchen experiment!  Pull out a single stick, hold it at both ends, and bend it until it breaks.  How many fragments did you make? If the answer is 3 or more, pull out another stick and try again.  Were you able to break the noodle in two? This challenge flummoxed Feynman for years as he tried to find a theoretical explanation for why the sticks refused to snap in two.

It was until recently that researchers were able to find an explanation as to why!  Read about the mathematical explanation and how it applies to multifiber structures, engineered nanotubes, and much more here!
