Now that the school year has some real momentum, Minnetonka parents are talking a lot about getting back into a routine. Activities are back, homework is a nightly thing again, and everyone's trying to find their footing. One thing I'm hearing more and more is, they knew how to do this last year, but now they're struggling. Usually that means the new material is exposing a foundational skill that never quite got locked in.
The struggles I'm seeing aren't tied to one grade or one topic. They're foundational gaps showing up everywhere. Fractions, multiplication and division fluency, multi step problems, algebraic thinking, even just knowing how to start a problem. A student can often do each piece just fine on its own, but the moment a few of those skills have to work together in the same problem, that's where things, and confidence, start to slip.
My advice for parents this month is to pay attention to effort, not just the grade. A kid can still pull a decent grade while quietly spending twice as long on homework, leaning hard on a parent for help, or getting more frustrated by the week. Those are the early signs worth paying attention to, because dealing with them now is a lot easier than rebuilding months of learning later.
Things are picking up at the center. We're running a raffle right now to help update our school and teacher information in Constant Contact, which helps us stay genuinely connected to the schools and communities our students come from. And starting October 1, we're launching a Dungeons and Dragons program every other week, open to both our students and the public.
I'm especially excited about the D&D nights because they give Minnetonka families a reason to connect with us that has nothing to do with tutoring. Problem solving, teamwork, strategy, all wrapped up in something genuinely fun. Homework is getting more consistent and the first assessments are starting to come back, so this is exactly the point in the year when patterns start to show. I want this center to feel like part of the community, not just a place you show up when something's wrong.
