Mathnasium of Mission Gorge's personalized algebra tutoring programs are designed to support students at every stage of their math journey.
We help students transition from concrete to abstract thinking, mastering integers, fractions, order of operations, and introductory variables while building the algebraic reasoning needed for Algebra 1.
Our caring tutors guide students through multi-step equations, linear functions, graphing, and word problems using personalized plans that turn this pivotal course into a confident foundation for future math success.
We support students with fast-paced, complex topics—factoring polynomials, quadratics, exponentials, and logarithms—building advanced problem-solving skills needed for Precalculus and college-prep coursework.
At Mathnasium of Mission Gorge, our specially trained math tutors help students of all skill levels learn and master algebra. We support students in Prealgebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2, as well as topics like expressions, equations, functions, graphing, polynomials, and exponential relationships.
We provide personalized, face-to-face instruction in a caring and fun group environment. Our tutors use clear, everyday language, meet students where they are, and guide them step by step so algebra feels understandable and confidence-building.
We use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand how algebra works while strengthening critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Our tutors combine proven interactive techniques with personalized learning plans tailored to each student’s needs and learning style. This makes algebra clear, meaningful, and easier to apply both in class and in real-world situations.
Students’ Mathnasium journey begins with a diagnostic assessment that helps us identify their current skills, learning gaps, and goals. Using these insights, we create a personalized learning plan that focuses on exactly what each student needs, whether they need to catch up, keep up, or get ahead.
With the plan in place, our tutors deliver targeted, supportive instruction, adapting in real time to the student’s learning style. This approach helps students fill knowledge gaps, strengthen foundational skills, and build lasting confidence as they progress through algebra.

Tommy Najarian
Owner/Center Director
Tommy Najarian, Owner and Center Director of Mathnasium, earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from UCLA. After working in the Aerospace and Defense industry, he discovered his passion for teaching while tutoring underrepresented college students in math and physics.
That experience inspired him to open Mathnasium and share his love of math with the community. Tommy believes the Mathnasium Method™ helps students gain both confidence and skills. Outside the center, he enjoys basketball, yoga, weightlifting, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
Alan Ouniquian

He believes Mathnasium offers one of the most effective systems for teaching math by building true number sense. Alan enjoys guiding students toward intuitive understanding and hopes to inspire them to see the beauty in mathematics.
Isaac Aguayo
Lead Instructor
Born and raised in San Diego and I studied Mechanical Engineering at SDSU with a minor in Anthropology. Physics and math have always been my favorite subjects because they help explain the randomness around us. I also am big on weightlifting, video games, and recently bowling. Favorite Number: My favorite number is 5 because even though it's an odd number it feels like and even if that makes sense. Also what I always used for sports as a kid. Favorite Math Joke: "What is the integral of 1/(Cabin)? A log cabin you say? NO! A houseboat, you forgot the C." In 5 years, I will be: working and designing different engines in cars or planes. I love Mathnasium because: it shows students that there is more to math than just equations and can help with problem-solving skills while also being fun. It also allows me to learn more as there is always more than one way to solve a math problem so it is really cool to see how others approach each problem.
James Walrath
Lead Instructor
James studied Electrical Engineering at the University of San Diego and loves applying math to real-world challenges. A San Diego native, he enjoys social games, mountain biking, and eating KBBQ with friends. His favourite number is e, which shows up in so many unexpected locations throughout mathematics!
At Mathnasium, James enjoys seeing students transform uncertainty into confidence, aiding students in building lifelong skills which will support them in school, daily life, and future careers.
Jamie Glass
Lead Instructor
Jamie is a San Diego native and psychology major at San Diego State University. She enjoys pilates, baking, walking her dog, and spending time with friends and family. Her favourite number is 9, tied to her birthday, soccer jersey, and luck.
At Mathnasium, Jamie loves helping students gain confidence in math. She finds it rewarding to see learners realize math can be approachable and even enjoyable once they build a stronger foundation.
Miranda Halverson
Lead Instructor
Although I am a San Diego native, I have studied Neuroscience in New York, worked in a laboratory in London, toured the country in a two-person production of A Christmas Carol, taught theater for Disney in Beijing, trained exotic animals in Seattle, even worked in a Mathnasium in Honolulu! Currently I am obtaining a Master's in Conservation at the San Diego Zoo. And guess what all these things have in common? Math! But feel free to ask me about almost anything. Favorite Number: Pi, because it has the best holiday. Favorite Math Joke: i says to pi: Be rational! pi says to i: Get real! In five years, I will be: Operating an outreach program to educate children about the awesomeness of opossums. I love Mathnasium because: The curriculum opens kids' eyes to how cool and useful their least favorite (often) subject can be. Math and opossums have a lot in common.
