Is Your Child Really Ready for the Next Level of Math?
For many Monterey families, the end of the school year brings relief. Report cards are in, summer plans are underway, and if your child passed math, it's easy to assume everything is on track. But passing math and being prepared for the next level aren't always the same thing.
At Mathnasium of Monterey, we often meet students who earned passing grades but still have gaps in important skills such as fractions, decimals, multiplication fluency, number sense, or problem-solving.These gaps may not seem significant at first. However, as math becomes more abstract in middle school, Algebra, Geometry, and advanced coursework, these gaps often become much harder to ignore.
Why Grades Don't Tell the Whole Story
Math builds on itself year after year. A student may complete homework, memorize procedures, and earn decent grades while still missing important concepts. For example, they may know how to follow a rule for fractions without truly understanding what fractions represent. They may solve familiar problems successfully but struggle when a question is presented in a different way. These weaknesses can remain hidden until future courses expect those skills to be automatic.
That's why a report card doesn't always tell the whole story.
Can My Child Move Ahead — and Should They?
Many students feel pressure to move into accelerated math tracks, especially when classmates are doing so. For some students, acceleration is a great fit. But moving ahead before the foundation is secure can create frustration later. Instead of asking, "Can my child move ahead?" parents may want to ask: "Does my child have the understanding and confidence needed to succeed at the next level?" A strong foundation is often more valuable than moving ahead quickly.
Signs Your Child May Need Additional Support
Before moving into the next level of math, consider these questions:
- • Can my child confidently work with fractions, decimals, and percentages?
- • Can they explain their thinking rather than simply memorize steps?
- • Can they solve multi-step word problems?
- • Do they understand why a method works?
- • Do they approach math with confidence or frustration?
The answers may reveal more than a grade ever could.
