How to Support Math Learning at Home

Math doesn't have to be the enemy. Yet by some estimates, as high as 93 percent of Americans feel some degree of math anxiety. If you're one of those parents who break into a cold sweat when your child asks for help with their math homework, you're not alone. But here's the good news: you can still help your child become confident with numbers, even if math isn't your strong suit.

Why Your Role Matters More Than You Think

Studies show that a child's math skills at kindergarten entry are a better predictor of future academic success than reading skills, social skills, or the ability to focus. This means the foundation you build at home has lasting impact. Parents and caregivers have a powerful role to play in shaping a child's attitude toward math and their ability to engage with it.

The challenge? Many parents avoid math activities because they feel unprepared. But supporting math learning at home doesn't require advanced degrees or perfect recall of algebra. It requires the right mindset and simple, practical approaches.

Start With Your Own Math Mindset

Before you can help your child, you need to check your own relationship with math. Research shows that parents with high math anxiety can negatively impact their children's learning when they help with homework frequently. When highly anxious parents help often, their children learn less math and become more math anxious than their peers.

What NOT to say:

  • "I'm bad at math"
  • "Math is hard"
  • "I hated math when I was your age"
  • "Some people just aren't math people"

What TO say instead:

  • "Let me use my calculator to check this"
  • "Math helps us solve real problems"
  • "There are different ways to think about this"
  • "Mistakes help us learn"

When kids get the message that parents don't like math, their math achievement goes down immediately, and that's shown in particular with mothers and daughters.

Make Math Part of Daily Life

The best math learning happens naturally, woven into everyday activities. Math is everywhere. That's great news for parents, because we can talk with our kids about math in fun, natural ways.

In the Kitchen

You can't help but use math when you're baking. Doubling recipes requires multiplying, halving a recipe requires dividing, and measuring a ½ cup or a ¼ teaspoon gets you working with easy fractions. Even simple tasks work:

  • Count chocolate chips or blueberries
  • Compare sizes: "Which measuring cup is bigger?"
  • Talk about time: "The cookies need 12 minutes. How many minutes is that from now?"
  • Practice fractions: "We need half a cup of flour"

At the Store

Shopping trips offer countless math opportunities:

  • Give your child change to count out to pay for small purchases at the store
  • Ask your child to compare prices of items by asking things like, "Which can of beans costs more?"
  • Allow your child to weigh the fresh produce; have older children calculate the price by multiplying the price per pound by the number of pounds
  • Count items: "We need 8 apples. How many more do we need?"

Around the House

  • Have your child help set the table and count out the plates, napkins, and silverware
  • Count and pair objects found around the house and determine whether there's an odd or even number of items
  • Sort laundry by size, color, or type
  • Measure furniture or rooms together

Use Games and Play-Based Learning

Games are mathematics in disguise. Research has shown that the more kids play any game with dice and numbered squares — like Chutes and Ladders — the better their basic math skills get.

Recommended Games by Age:

Ages 3-6:

  • Chutes and Ladders
  • Concentration, Connect Four, Dominoes
  • Counting Scavenger Hunt (find and count objects around the house)

Ages 7-11:

  • Monopoly, Yahtzee, Uno
  • Math Card War (practice addition, subtraction, and multiplication)
  • Chess, Checkers, Battleship

Ages 12+:

  • Risk, Stratego
  • Complex strategy games
  • Card games involving probability

These games will also strengthen computation and estimation. Games help students see patterns, promote algebraic thinking, and even touch on statistics, probability, geometry, and measurement.

Ask the Right Questions

When your child faces a math problem, resist the urge to jump in with answers. Instead, ask questions that guide their thinking:

Helpful Questions:

  • "What is this problem about?"
  • "Could you act out the problem with objects?"
  • "Have you worked on other problems that could help you with this one?"
  • "How do you know? Are you sure? How could you check your answer? Is there another way?"

Questions like these help children develop a repertoire of strategies for any problem. Having a toolbox to help get unstuck can promote resilience and perseverance.

What NOT to do:

  • Give answers immediately
  • Say "That's wrong" without explanation
  • Take over the problem
  • Show frustration when they don't understand

Support Different Learning Styles

Children learn math in different ways. A popular way to help kids learn math is by engaging various senses. Teachers use sight, hearing, touch, and movement to help kids understand what numbers and symbols mean.

Visual Learners

  • Use pictures, charts, and diagrams
  • Bar modeling is a visual approach to problems. Students are taught to use bars to represent the relationship between known and unknown quantities
  • Color-code different types of problems
  • Draw number lines for comparisons

Auditory Learners

  • Provide your child with verbal math problems: "Take the number five. Add six. Multiply by three. Subtract three. Divide by five. What's your answer?"
  • Sing math facts
  • Talk through problems step by step
  • Review math facts at home, in the car, waiting in line, or during other downtime

Hands-On Learners

  • Count objects: young children should always be counting
  • Use manipulatives like blocks, coins, or toys
  • Students are first introduced to a skill or concept with objects, or hands-on manipulatives. This is the foundation for conceptual learning
  • Act out word problems

Address Math Anxiety Early

Math anxiety is more than just worrying about one math test or saying, "I hate math." Most often it's a pattern of anxiety over math schoolwork, especially regarding tests and board work.

Warning Signs:

  • A child who avoids math homework so parents must intervene to get the child to do it
  • Kids who understand the subject when studying but want to stay home from school or go to the nurse feeling sick on math test day
  • Physical symptoms like stomachaches before math class
  • Saying "I can't do math" or "I'm stupid"

Strategies to Help:

  1. Normalize the feelings: Encourage learners to talk about their math anxiety- let them know that it's OK to feel that way about math-related tasks or math tests
  2. Use expressive writing: A simple, inexpensive, and very effective tool called expressive writing. This straightforward act of writing may help older students to perform better on the math test than what they would have performed had they not written at all
  3. Focus on effort over ability: Praise the process, not just the result. Say "You worked really hard on that problem" instead of "You're so smart."
  4. Keep it fun: Try math games from counting Cheerios at breakfast to actual math games; make it fun and positive rather than stressful

Age-Specific Activities

Early Childhood (Ages 3-6)

  • Have your child make a number book that contains a page for each numeral from one to ten. On each page, have your child glue clippings from newspapers and magazines illustrating that number concept
  • Start with a group of three pennies, and have children say how many are in the group. Show them that by taking away or adding a penny, the group becomes smaller or larger
  • Practice patterns with colors, shapes, or sounds
  • Sing counting songs

Elementary Years (Ages 7-11)

  • Ask your child how many different ways they can show a specific number, say, 18 (they might say 16 + 2, 19 – 1, 10 + 7 + 1, that sort of thing)
  • Help your child identify percentages in signs, newspapers, and magazines
  • Practice estimation skills
  • Use real-world word problems

Middle School and Beyond

  • Connect math to their interests and career goals
  • Listen to what interests them and look for ways to connect math to those interests
  • Discuss how math applies in different professions
  • Support independent problem-solving

Create a Math-Rich Environment

Transform your home into a place where math feels natural:

  • Fill your home with math-related materials, including books, puzzles, and educational games
  • Incorporate math-themed decorations or posters in your child's learning space
  • Encourage the use of math manipulatives like blocks, shapes, or measuring tools
  • Keep calculators available for checking work
  • Display math vocabulary words

When to Seek Additional Help

Sometimes home support isn't enough. Consider additional help if:

  • Your child consistently struggles despite your efforts
  • If your child takes a long time to do math homework and still gets many problems incorrect
  • Math anxiety persists or worsens
  • There are signs of learning differences like dyscalculia
