Why Teach Number Sense?

This blog has an excellent explanation of what number sense means and why it is so important to teach students to do math in a way that makes sense to them:

"Common Core Is Not the Enemy - why you hate it and why we need a new perspective in education."

I especially like her explanation here:

The point is we need stories, illustrations, and context to give the formulas and algorithms meaning. We desperately need to understand the foundations of our knowledge. Otherwise math becomes meaningless and forgettable.

Mathnasium is about more than just helping a student pass a grade. It's about number sense. And it is about building that curiousity, that grit, that ability to solve hard problems, that stick-to-it-ivness that begins with number sense in mathematics and can be applied to anything.
