Hello. I'm Catherine Umana, Owner/Center Director of Mathnasium of Palo Alto/Menlo Park, your neighborhood math-only learning center. I'd like to share some of the services we offer in math tutoring for kids in the Portola Valley area.
- We know how to teach your child math.
Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting – our unique approach enables us to effectively explain math concepts well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our tutors largely come from the Portola Valley area, both High Schools and Stanford University, and they foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn!
- We pinpoint your child’s learning needs, meet them where they are, and take them where they need to go.
Mathnasium instructors at our facility (local for our Portola Valley students) use our unique assessment process to determine (with great accuracy) exactly what each child knows and what they need to learn. Next, we design a customized learning plan for teaching the concepts the student needs to master. It doesn’t stop there – our encouraging instructors continually check progress along the way to make sure kids truly understand and retain the concepts we’ve taught. The results are transformative – kids will see measurable changes in attitude, confidence, and school progress in the Portola Valley school system.
- We will help your child overcome homework frustration.
Our instructors will also set aside time to provide homework help, so important to success in the Portola Valley, California, school system. We help kids understand the homework assignment so they feel better prepared to complete the work at home – underscoring their understanding of concepts and transforming homework frustration into a welcome challenge.
We love Portola Valley, the community we serve! Here are some fun facts about Portola Valley and its surrounding area:
Surrounded by wooded hills, Portola Valley (4500 residents) is located just west of Stanford University in a green and gold valley astride the world-famous San Andreas Fault. Portola Valley values its environmental and historic heritage, its excellent public schools and its economical Town Government supported by a multitude of volunteers. An extensive trail system, scenic roads, open space and natural views contribute to one's feeling of being in the country, as do architectural guidelines that stress "blending in." Commercial activity in Portola Valley is encouraged to the extent that it primarily meets needs of residents of the community. These factors have enabled Portola Valley to retain a rural ambiance reminiscent of earlier days.
Portola Valley's beautiful Town Center lives up to its name. Officially opened in September of 2008, the new Town Center campus provides residents with:
- an inviting and cozy Portola Valley library with wi-fi access, children's reading room, and special activities;
- the beautiful Portola Valley Community Hall offering classes for adults and young ones, along with a large community room and smaller activity rooms for resident activities and rental;
- a variety of recreational playing fields, including soccer, softball, tennis, and a children's play area;
- Portola Valley Town Hall for government functions and residents' building & planning needs;
- a corporate yard & storage area for Portola Valley vehicles and tools;
- Portola Valley Maintenance Building, which provides office space for the Town's maintenance staff and the Sheriff's deputies.
In addition, Portola Valley's Town's Historic Schoolhouse continues to serve as the official chambers for Council, Commission, and Committee meetings.
