Moving Beyond Memorization

At Mathnasium, we believe that mastering mental math is about more than just memorizing facts. It’s about understanding how numbers work and building a strong foundation of numerical fluency that students can draw on with confidence. Our summer programs are designed to help students move beyond rote methods and develop a range of mental strategies that make computation faster, easier, and more accurate.
This summer, we’re offering two focused 3-month programs designed to boost foundational math skills:
Numerical Fluency Program (Addition & Subtraction): Students strengthen number sense, develop efficient strategies, and build confidence in everyday math.
Multiplication Fact Fluency Program (Multiplication & Division): Students move beyond memorization by understanding relationships between numbers and using strategic thinking for quicker recall and problem solving.
Why does this matter so much? As your child progresses through school, teachers will assume these foundational skills are already in place and won't take the time to review them. Topics like fractions, algebra, and problem solving all rely heavily on strong number sense. For example, students who understand multiplication and division deeply will find it much easier to simplify fractions or solve proportion problems.
