Why Math Gets Harder as Students Get Older—and What Parents Can Do
Have you ever heard your child say, "Math used to be easy"?

A few signs may indicate that your child's current math struggles are connected to an earlier skill:
Homework takes much longer than expected.
A student may understand the concept but spend excessive time working through basic calculations.
Your child says, "I used to know this."
This can indicate that a skill hasn't become automatic or hasn't been practiced enough to remain secure.
Small changes to a problem cause confusion.
A student may know how to follow a familiar example but struggle when the numbers or wording change.
Your child avoids math altogether.
Frustration can eventually turn into avoidance, especially when a student has experienced repeated difficulty.
These signs don't necessarily mean your child has a major math gap. But they can be worth paying attention to.

The goal is to make sure students have the tools they need to handle increasingly difficult mathematics.
