Mathnasium of Sayville: Why Math Should Be Celebrated

Mar 15, 2026 | Sayville

Q1: How does your center make math fun and engaging for students?

A1:
We celebrate strong quiz/test performance with wheel spins (and a chance to win rewards, extra rewards stars and cards), and put a copy of the quiz/test on our Brag Board. We celebrate Pi Day (on Thursday, March 12th since we're closed on Fri and Sat) with Pi-themed games, arts and crafts projects, Pi-shaped foods/treats, and a contest to see who can memorize the most digits of Pi (winner gets 25 rewards cards!).

Q2: What does Pi Day mean to your students and instructors?

A2:
It's an opportunity to have fun, play games, enjoy treats, test our knowledge of a fun math concept ("Pi"), and strengthen our community!

Q3: How do celebrations help students feel more confident in math?

A3:
We have Pi-themed games, arts and crafts, and a contest to see who can memorize the most digits of Pi--this builds awareness, knowledge, skills, and confidence.

Q4: Why is it important to show kids that math can be enjoyable?

A4:
Many students (and often parents!) fear math or feel it is inaccessible or extremely challenging. If we can help them see that it can be fun and engaging, and similar to other challenging-but-fun activities (video games, sports, puzzles, riddles, board games, etc.), we might get the engaged enough to gain momentum and turn that fear into a lifelong love of math!
