Making Waves in Math This Summer at Mathnasium of Spokane Valley

Q1: What’s one way your center makes summer learning fun and engaging for students??

Lead Instructor Isaiah: Over the summer, Mathnasium is amazing at keeping learning fun by implementing extra prizes. One example is our summer bingo sheet where students can complete tasks to fill out their bingo sheet and win a prize! Additionally this summer, we started Mathnasium passports where students can win a grand prize by attending for 12 months! On top of all of this, we continue our themed weeks to make each week different and exciting!

Q2: What’s a moment this summer that reminded you why you love working with students?

Instructor Jocelyn: One moment this summer that reminded me why I love working with students was when I was working with a student on a topic that had been confusing to them, and we were able to find an explanation together that made sense to them. I got to see the moment where all the information just clicked in their brain.

Q3: Why do you think summer is such a powerful time for students to build math skills?

Instructor Gus: There's two reasons: one, like many other skills, math is a skill that must be maintained through practice or else, one will start to forget how to do it. Since there is no school, many forget how to do many of the math skills they learned over the school year. And since math skills build on previous knowledge so heavily, this can prove to be an issue! Two, summer is a great opportunity to catch up on one's math skills. In school, math is constantly moving forward, making it easy to fall behind in the instruction. These are where the gaps in necessary knowledge forms, so this is a great time to catch up, set a pace where one can really take the time to learn everything and have it stick! Then start the next school year with more confidence than ever and ready to succeed, making it a very important time for instruction.
