Calling all young problem solvers! Student registration for the Mathnasium TriMathlonstarts on September 1 and runs until November 4! Hosted at participating Mathnasium centers, the Mathnasium TriMathlon is a fun, friendly math competition that gives all students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades the chance to strut their mathematical stuff. Plus, student participation benefits local schools—Mathnasium will make a financial contribution to community schools for every child who participates!

Read on for the inside scoop on this fun, free community event!

What is the Mathnasium TriMathlon?

The TriMathlon is a free community math competition held at participating Mathnasium locations. It consists of three events which focus on various mathematical concepts that students typically study in each grade: The Counting Game (tests students’ ability to count from any number, to any number, by any number), Magic Squares (students are awarded points for developing their own math problems), andMental Math Workout (tests students’ number sense by asking them to solve given problems the ‘smart’ way, without pencil and paper). Prepare for the event by trying out our grade-level practice tests!

The top scorers in each grade level across all participating centers qualify for theNational Grand Prize TriMathlon. Competitors at this level will vie for recognition as National Grand Prize winners!

Every TriMathlete receives a fun goody bag just for participating! The top three scorers in each grade level at each participating center’s local competition receive first, second, and third place medals and prizes. National Grand Prize winners receive plaques and Mathnasium scholarships.

When is the TriMathlon?

Local TriMathlon competitions will take place during the weekend of Saturday, November 5 and Sunday, November 6, 2016. Contact your local Mathnasium to find out the specific date on which their event will be held. The National Grand Prize TriMathlon will be held the weekend of Saturday, November 19 and Sunday, November 20.

Who is organizing the Mathnasium TriMathlon and why?

Participating Mathnasium Learning Centers are hosting TriMathlon events. If there’s one thing we love at Mathnasium, it’s the chance to showcase how fun math truly is! We host the TriMathlon every fall to generate excitement about math education among students and celebrate the accomplishments of students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.

Who can compete in the TriMathlon?

Any student in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade in public, private, or home schools in the United States may compete at a participating Mathnasium Learning Center. You don’t have to be a Mathnasium student to participate!

Students in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades can compete in one competition either in their grade level or any of the higher levels. Students are not allowed to compete at a grade level lower than their school grade level. All students may only compete in one TriMathlon competition and, for example, may not participate in a competition at their grade level and one above, or participate at more than one center.

Once registration ends on November 4, a center may allow a child in a grade below 2nd grade to compete if space is available. This is at the discretion of the local center and will be done on a first-come, first-served basis. These students will be eligible for the same prizes at the local and National Grand Prize level offered to students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.

Is there a way for me to participate if there is no Mathnasium in my area? Maybe online?

Unfortunately, no. The TriMathlon only takes place at participating Mathnasium Learning Centers.

How do I register for the TriMathlon?

Starting September 1, register online at http://www.mathnasiumtrimathlon.com/. If you do not have access to the Internet, visit your local learning center, and register in person. Registration closes November 4.

May I bring a calculator when I compete?

Math is more fun when you really get into working with and exploring numbers on your own! All problems during the competition are to be completed without the use of a calculator. Moreover, bringing or using any electronic devices (such as cell phones, calculators, tape recorders, and music players) in the testing room is not permitted.

What do I need to bring to the Mathnasium TriMathlon?

Come prepared with your signed Parent/Guardian Agreement and Participant Code of Conduct, which you’ll receive upon registration. We’ll provide all TriMathletes with pencils and all other items necessary for the competition. (Scrap paper, notes, and reference materials are also prohibited.) Additionally, please be aware that competitors who arrive after the official registration time for their grade level will not be able to compete. Please contact your local participating Mathnasium center for further details. Otherwise, be punctual and come prepared with smiles, a sharp mathematical mind, and a positive attitude!

Are parents allowed to watch their child compete?

We want to give our TriMathletes every opportunity possible to do their very best! This includes providing them with a quiet, distraction-free testing area. Parents are not allowed in the competition area while the competition and/or test grading is taking place. Each competition location will host a hospitality area for parents, family members, and friends.

We hope you’re as excited about TriMathlon fun as we are! Head over to www.mathnasiumtrimathlon.com to register and learn more. We’re so excited to share our love of math with your community!
