Step Up To The Plate for Learning: Brewers Math Day 2025

Feb 18, 2025 | Wauwatosa

Are you looking for a fun and unique way to practice math? Brewers Math Day is the perfect opportunity for students to experience math in action while enjoying an exciting day at American Family Field! This one-of-a-kind field trip brings together the thrill of baseball and the power of numbers to create an unforgettable learning experience.

The Origin of Brewers Math Day

The idea for Brewers Math Day originated from a similar event hosted by the Minnesota Twins. However, when the Milwaukee Brewers approached Derek Pipkorn, owner of Mathnasium of Brookfield, Franklin, Lake Country, Mequon, Oconomowoc, Waukesha, and Wauwatosa, he saw an opportunity to create a truly special one-day event. With the help of his colleague Paige Richards from Build Capacity Consulting, Derek developed an engaging curriculum that would turn a baseball game into an engaging learning opportunity for students. The first official Brewers Math Day took place in 2018, initially serving 3rd through 8th graders. By 2021, the program expanded to include high school-level problems, making it accessible to an even broader range of students.

A Day of Math and Baseball

Brewers Math Day is more than just a field trip—it's a hands-on learning experience! Students work through specially designed math problems that connect directly to the game. They analyze player stats, calculate batting averages, and explore real-world applications of mathematical concepts. Additionally, Brewers players have participated in interviews displayed on the big screen, sharing insights on how math plays a crucial role in baseball strategy and performance.

Favorite Math Day Memories

For Derek, Brewers Math Day holds many special moments, but one of his favorites was throwing out the first pitch—twice! The first time was in 2019, when Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney was scheduled to throw right after him. Derek recalls, “I fired a hard strike, and he even complimented me on the pitch. It was a cool experience, especially since he had just won the National Championship that year.”

Why Students Should Attend Brewers Math Day

At Mathnasium, we believe that making math fun and building confidence leads to remarkable progress. Brewers Math Day is designed to do just that! By connecting math with a live baseball game, students gain a deeper appreciation for the subject in a setting that is both exciting and educational. Teachers can feel confident knowing that the activities align with their math curriculum and provide valuable classroom discussions after the event. The data students collect during the game can be analyzed later, reinforcing lessons and fostering collaboration among classmates.

A Growing Tradition

Despite having to cancel Math Day due to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, Brewers Math Day has seen incredible growth over the years. The first Math Day in 2018 brought in 1,675 attendees. Last year’s event in 2024 had almost 9000! With attendance numbers growing each year, Brewers Math Day continues to prove its value as a premier educational event for Wisconsin students. Let’s work together to make 2025 the biggest Math Day yet!
