What is a Fraction?

The result of breaking a whole into equal parts; one or more of those equal parts. (Compare with “division.”)

A fraction is a way of showing a part of a whole. When something is split into equal parts, a fraction tells us how many of those parts we have.

Fractions have two parts:

  • The numerator (top number) shows how many parts we’re talking about
  • The denominator (bottom number) shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into

For example:

  • \(\displaystyle\frac{1}{2}\) means 1 part out of 2 equal parts (one-half), where 1 is the numerator and 2 is the denominator

  • \(\displaystyle\frac{3}{4}\) means 3 parts out of 4 equal parts (three-fourths), where 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator

Fractions are closely related to division. In fact, every fraction is like a division problem in disguise. For example, \(\displaystyle\frac{3}{4}\) represents the division of 3 by 4, showing how many parts we have (3) out of how many equal parts make up the whole (4).

Fractions help us:

  • Measure ingredients in a recipe
  • Understand time (like quarter past the hour)
  • Compare amounts and split things fairly

We also use fractions to show numbers between whole numbers, parts of a group or set, and relationships in geometry and measurement.

When Do Students Learn About Fractions?

Students begin learning about fractions in the early elementary grades by exploring equal parts, and they develop a deeper understanding as they grow.

Grades 1–2 – Introducing the Idea of Fractions

Students start identifying halves, thirds, and fourths using visuals and hands-on activities. They learn that fractions are parts of a whole.

Grades 3–5 – Working with Fractions

Students compare, add, subtract, and multiply fractions. They learn how to find common denominators, convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions, and relate fractions to decimals.

Grades 6+ – Applying Fractions in Advanced Math

Students use fractions in ratio, proportion, algebraic expressions, and real-world problem solving.
