What is Arithmetic?
The process of changing (transforming) one number into another by using a given set of rules. The mathematics of integers, rational numbers, real numbers, and complex numbers under the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, that is, computation.
Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with basic number operations: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. It is the part of math that most people use every day—even without realizing it.

Whether you’re adding prices at the store, dividing snacks among friends, or multiplying items in equal groups—you’re using arithmetic.

When Do Students Learn About Arithmetic?
Students begin learning arithmetic concepts as soon as they start working with numbers—and their understanding deepens year after year.
Preschool & Kindergarten (Ages 3–5)
Students begin recognizing numbers, counting, and comparing groups. They’re introduced to simple ideas like “more,” “less,” and “same.”
Grades 1–2 – Basic Arithmetic
Students learn addition and subtraction facts, solve simple word problems, and use visual tools like number lines and counters.
