What Does "Non-" Mean in Math?

A prefix meaning not; nullifying.


Non- is a prefix that negates or reverses the meaning of the word it is attached to. When we add "non-" to a mathematical term, we are describing something that does not have that property.


For example:

  • A nonagon is a polygon, but "non-" here comes from the Latin "nonus" (ninth), not the negating prefix. This is a common point of confusion worth noting.

  • A non-example is something that does not fit a given definition, so the opposite of an example.

  • A non-linear function is one that does not follow a straight line.

  • A non-integer is any number that is not an integer, such as 1.5 or 2/3.

  • A non-terminating decimal is one that does not end, such as 0.333...


Recognizing the prefix non- helps students decode unfamiliar terms quickly. If they know what a term means, adding non- signals the opposite, which is a useful tool for building mathematical vocabulary efficiently.
