SAT / ACT / PSAT Prep with Mathnasium

Jan 24, 2020 | Mira Mesa & Scripps Ranch

Here at Mathnasium of Mira Mesa / Scripps Ranch, we're constantly looking to find new and improved ways of supporting our students in accomplishing all of their academic goals.

Not only do we reinforce our students school work by front-loading and studying for upcoming tests to achieve mastery with current concepts. We also identify and aim to fill potential gaps while also providing enrichment outside of school hours and during school breaks. For our high school students, we even work towards preparing them for every new step in their future education with our SAT/ACT/PSAT Prep Program!

We know any exam, especially college entrance exams, can bring a lot of anxiety to both parents and students. It is very common to feel overwhelmed, confused, and unprepared for these exams when starting this new step towards college acceptance. Luckily, test administators understand this and students have the opportunity to retake the SAT/ACT as many times as they would like until they reach a desired score.

So whether we're working towards our first attempt at the SAT/ACT, or have already attempted it and are trying to increase your score, Mathnasium is here to help. We provide direct instruction on the math concepts that are required to succeed on these tests, help students strengthen their test-taking and time management skills, as well as demystify these exams by deconstructing the essentials from each section.

One approach we use to strengthen test-taking skills is by teaching students to answer the easiest questions throughout the exam first. Many students are accustomed to taking a test in the order the questions are written and this habit can be costly! Since the SAT is timed, students have approximately one minute to answer each question in order to finish the exam on time. Therefore, spending a signigicant amount of time on a single question can profoundly damage a student's score.

A sufficient way to break out of this habit is with regular practice over the course of time. Here at Mathnasium, we encourage students to begin using this test-taking skill on their math tests and quizzes from school. Remind your student that skipping through and completing all the easier questions first can leave additional time that will be valuable when going back to work on questions that have been identified as difficult or time-consuming. If at the end, any questions still remain blank, make an educated guess! This gives you a 20% chance of getting the answer correctly rather than 0% for leaving it blank!
