Summer Slide Meets COVID Slide

May 18, 2020 | Mira Mesa & Scripps Ranch

As the end of the school year comes to a close, it can feel like it is time to kick our feet up and begin enjoying summer vacation. Summer 2020 is far more critical of a time than some may realize.

With school closing two months early and the transition to virtual learning, many students are feeling unmotivated in their education. Researchers anticipate that students will experience devastating learning loss during this time and they are calling it the COVID19 slide.

In a normal summer, most students lose up to two months of their previous school year's skills and foundation. This year, many experts predict that many students learning loss will be equivalent to several months to more than a school year of material! This learning loss can have a serious effect on grades, motivation, and in the students' overall confidence.

How can parents help prevent this much learning loss? Students' should be receiving consistent enrichment through educational resources such as learning centers, news channels, podcasts, radio shows, books, etc. Engaging in enrichment activities once or twice a week can help maintain an active mind and help in preparing for the upcoming school year, any challenges, and their futures.
