Kimberly Smith
Owner
Kimberly Smith holds a B.S. in Industrial and Operations Engineering and an M.S. in Engineering Management from the University of Michigan. After a successful 13-year career at Chrysler, where she held roles such as Business Planner and Manufacturing Manager, Kimberly shifted her focus to a lifelong passion: creating educational opportunities for children.
Having seen how math struggles can affect confidence, she was inspired by Mathnasium’s ability to make math accessible and meaningful. Kimberly now owns four Mathnasium locations in the Metro Detroit area, where she continues to spread the love of math and problem-solving to students of all levels.
Kevin Steinhelper
Center Director
Kevin has been part of the Mathnasium family since 2012, starting as an instructor before becoming Center Director of the Plymouth-Canton Center in 2016 and West Bloomfield in 2019. A University of Michigan graduate with a B.S. in Mathematics, Kevin also has professional experience as an Actuarial Analyst.
With a lifelong love of math, he is dedicated to student success and goes above and beyond to ensure every student leaves feeling confident and accomplished. When not at the center, Kevin enjoys sports, playing the piano, and spending time with his many nieces and nephews.
Larry
Assistant Center Director
Larry holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Wayne State University and brings over six years of Mathnasium experience. His journey in education began with homeschooling his daughter, where he discovered a passion for helping kids learn and thrive.
Larry loves seeing “light bulb” moments when students grasp challenging concepts, and he excels at making math approachable through creative teaching strategies. Fun fact: Larry’s love for math was sparked in chemistry class while doing unit conversions—he was fascinated by how numbers fit together like a puzzle.
Naina
Assistant Center Director
Naina brings eight years of teaching and tutoring experience to Mathnasium. Her passion for teaching is what drew her to the role, and that passion shows in how she approaches every session. What she loves most about teaching math is the interaction with students and the opportunity to help them build real, lasting skills. Naina especially enjoys working through multi-step problems and fractions, guiding students step by step until the process becomes second nature.
Fred
Instructor
Fred brings more than 30 years of math teaching experience to Mathnasium, having taught at Stevenson High School and Schoolcraft College. He holds multiple advanced degrees, including an M.A. in Math and an MBA from EMU, and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from U of M-Dearborn.
Though recently retired from full-time teaching, Fred couldn’t resist continuing to share his love for math. He especially enjoys teaching Geometry’s conditional statements for their real-world logic applications. Outside the classroom, Fred is a seasoned tennis coach, chess player, and boater who still plays doubles every Sunday night—a tradition since 1981!
Jacob
Instructor
Jacob graduated from Wayne State University with a B.A. in Education, specializing in Mathematics. He is passionate about helping kids build confidence, feel valued, and succeed in math. Jacob’s favorite areas to teach include Algebra, ratios, percentages, linear equations, and prime/composite numbers.
He finds joy in watching students practice and improve over time. When not teaching, Jacob enjoys jogging, swimming, board and card games, watching sports, and spending time with family and friends—often with Netflix in the background. Fun fact: he shares a birthday with his mom! His favorite math motto? “Effort leads to success—keep practicing to stay sharp in math!”
Benjamin
Instructor
Benjamin holds a Master's degree from Stonybrook University and has been teaching and tutoring for 8 years. His passion for teaching stems from his love of helping students improve and seeing them make significant progress. What he loves most about teaching math is watching students realize how different math concepts build on each other and how they apply to new situations. His favorite math topic to teach is geometry proofs, where students can truly grasp the logical structure of mathematics. Outside of teaching, Benjamin enjoys making 3D models and animations as a fun hobby.
